What do you do when you wake up with a hangover and find yourself in bed with your best friend's younger brother?
Who happens to be your new brother-in-law?
The man who drives you crazy.
The man who always skated by on fast-talk, good looks, and a bright smile.
The one who makes you want to break all the rules.
You hire him as your assistant, of course.
And pray you can keep your sanity.
And your hands off him.
Mason
How do you prove you've changed?
That you're no longer the party-boy who always needed rescuing from his own mistakes—and boy you've made some big ones.
But no one needs to know your secrets.
You take a job with the one man who doesn't trust you.
Who's waiting for you to screw up.
You try and forget that one explosive night together.
Except you can't.
And to your shock...neither can he.
What do you do when the one man you can't imagine living with is the one you can't live without?
“If people refuse to look at you in a new light and they can only see you for what you were, only see you for the mistakes you’ve made, if they don’t realize that you are not your mistakes, then they have to go.” ~ Steve Marabolia
Maybe sleeping with his brother’s best friend and his new brother-in-law, Jude, wasn’t the best idea Mason, of ‘Mr. Uptight’ by Felice Stevens, has ever had. But considering how long Mason has had a crush on Jude, when the opportunity presented itself, he couldn’t resist taking advantage of it. Mason thought that Jude might be a bit befuddled, but he didn’t expect Jude’s over-the-top reaction to the situation.
Jude’s main purpose in life has been to take care of his little sister, Ilana. After their mother died, he did everything he could to make sure she had whatever she needed in the way of financial and emotional support. Now that she is married to Doug, Jude’s best friend and business partner, he needs to step back and let him take care of her. When Jude wakes up with Mason, he is horrified! It is not only that Mason is Doug’s younger brother, it’s much more complicated than that. Jude has always had an attraction to Mason, one he can hardly even admit to himself. He quickly makes it clear to Mason that being with him was a mistake and can never happen again.
Mason is hurt by Jude’s reaction to their tryst. Of course he will honor Jude’s wishes and back off. As it so happens, staying away is going to be more difficult than he expects when, to his surprise, Jude hires him to take a position with the company while Doug is gone. Mason knows that Jude’s opinion of him isn’t the best. He has wandered aimlessly for the last ten years trying to figure out where he fits in. During that time, he has done some questionable things like sleeping with his boss as part of his contract as a personal assistant. Now he has left that all behind, gotten a business degree, and has come home to settle down. He is anxious to show Jude, and everyone else in his life, that he is not the feckless, wild boy that he was when he left.
In spite of their previous activities, Jude tries hard to be professional and put it behind them. The only thing is, he is so attracted to Mason that he is driving himself crazy trying to keep his hands off him. Meanwhile, Mason is trying hard to show he can be serious and productive. Eventually, their desire for each other proves stronger than their resolve. They become lovers. When Mason’s past comes back to haunt them, things get rocky real fast.
In ‘Mr. Uptight’ Felice reminds me of an important lesson: Honesty is the best policy. Had Mason told Jude the truth about his relationship with his previous boss, things would not have gone the way they did. I really liked Mason. He tried so hard to prove to everyone that he had changed. Jude took a little longer to like but Mason’s efforts to loosen him up helped me understand why he was the way he was. Thanks, Felice. I am relieved that Jude and Mason got their hard-earned happily ever after.
