"Come on, Tiger. Claw me up."
Hawke doesn’t talk about his past—and it’s not because he has a stutter that rarely lets him speak more than three words at a time.
The shadows of what was haunt his every waking hour, but the Broken Chains MC have been a sanctuary he never expected.
And Hawke is the sort of man who knows better than to cross lines, especially when it comes to the safety of his brothers.
But when Jax, the VP of the Cobras, looks at him like he’s a whole man instead of shattered pieces of the person he was before he left his home behind, he can’t help but want to be just a little bit wicked.
Two men in opposing clubs, each with enough baggage to load down a freight train, and a club war brewing are at the heart of this fourth installment in E.M. Lindsey’s ‘Broken Chains MC’ series.
“There was never a moment he regretted his decision to join, but he was glad the club hadn’t saved him the way it had saved Kicks or Gunner. It meant the world to him that he’d picked himself up and survived before Smokey had walked into his shop. That told him if everything crumbled around him again, it wouldn’t matter. He’d be able to move on.” ~ Hawke
A common theme running through the men in these stories is their horrific childhoods, and Hawke and Jax are no different. Hawke went to prison at a young age after beating his crackhead mom’s boyfriend half to death for daring to lay hands on Hawke’s little brother. While in prison he managed to piss off a very violent man who almost killed Hawke, but instead left him with a severe stutter and a few other neurological issues. Jax’s father is the President of the Cobras and not what one could even remotely call a halfway decent individual. Jax may be the VP but it’s pretty much only because his father figures anyone else would take every opportunity to kill him and take over. Jax grew up in this life and the only kindness he’s ever seen is from his grandmother. Two men. Lots of baggage.
‘Wicked’ brings the storyline back to the ins and outs of being in a club, along with trying to track down Rat for all the destruction he’s attempted on behalf of Hydra, and of course, trying to locate and eliminate Hydra. Sh*t is getting seriously real and the author sure doesn’t hold back in writing these characters. It’s not just morally ambiguous men in these clubs. It’s that plus each man’s feeling of not being remotely good even though it’s so obvious to see they can be, and often are. It’s a mean, nasty, backstabbing world the clubs exist in, but Smokey is doing his best to make the Broken Chains safe for his men. Not to mention the additional civvies who have appeared over the past few years.
“He didn’t know how to deal with emotions like this—a want that felt like a need. It made him crave violence because the one thing he couldn’t take was feeling out of control.” ~ Jax
After Smokey and Eliah, Hawke and Jax are my second favorite couple… so far, anyway. They are tough and harsh with this little edge of violent tension that is utterly enthralling. They work so well together and watching them fall in love was a gift. Every time they came together—pun totally intended—it was like watching fireworks explode in the night sky. Beautiful and deadly.
Thank you to the author for this addition to the series. I can’t lie though, so I have to admit to how very much I’m waiting for Rory and Ghost’s story. I’m pretty sure they’re going to put an end to this series with a very loud bang! If you like men who do what needs to be done and still get a full night’s sleep, then this club might be what you need.
